Recycled PET (polyester)

What is recycled PET?

Recycled PET, or rPET , is a material obtained by transforming used plastic bottles into yarn and then into fabric.

Also known as recycled polyester, PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) is a petroleum-based material that, while polluting, can be recycled. It is commonly used to make plastic bottles, as well as sportswear, swimwear, and other textiles.

RECYCLED PET: AN ECO-RESPONSIBLE MATERIAL?

Although PET is traditionally a polluting material, recycled PET is considered a more eco-responsible alternative in the fashion industry. It is part of a zero waste and circular economy approach, thus contributing to the reduction of plastic waste.

  • Every year, 1.5 million animals are killed by plastic pollution, according to the French Institute of Research for Development (IRD). Recycling plastic bottles helps reduce this pollution. Organizations are collaborating with fishermen to recover plastic from the oceans, allowing this plastic to be transformed into new clothing.
  • Recycling polyester reduces the total amount of polyester produced and oil extracted. Furthermore, rPET requires 59% less energy to produce than virgin PET, according to the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN).

Problems and Solutions

Recycled polyester clothing can release micro-plastic particles during washing, just like conventional polyester clothing. To limit this pollution, the use of the Guppy Friend washing bag is recommended. This bag retains micro-particles , preventing their dispersion into wastewater and oceans.

Recycled Clothing Brands and Labels

Brands like EcoAlf are pioneers in the field of recycled clothing. Javier Goyeneche, the founder of EcoAlf, has dedicated his efforts to creating high-quality recycled clothing. Through his "Upcycling the Oceans" project, EcoAlf has recovered over 400 tons of marine waste in collaboration with fishermen in the Mediterranean and Thailand.

Recycled clothing often carries the Global Recycled Standard (GRS) certification, guaranteeing its quality and commitment to the environment. At UJO, our clothing containing recycled polyester is all GRS certified.

From plastic bottle to recycled clothing: how does it work?

The transformation of plastic waste into clothing follows a precise process:

  1. Post-consumer plastic waste (bottles, packaging) is collected, sorted and cleaned.
  2. The PET is crushed into flakes and then washed.
  3. The clean flakes are converted into pellets, forming rPET.
  4. The pellets are melted to create recycled polyester yarn, which will be used to make new clothing.
