How to pick the most flattering colours for your skin tone

Colorimétrie : comment choisir les bonnes couleurs pour son teint? - UJŌ

Which colours suit you best? The answer is in your skin tone – and in your colour analysis.

What is colour analysis?

Colour analysis is the art of identifying which shades enhance you the most, based on your natural features.

Today, this approach is widely recognised in professional styling and used by image consultants to create harmonious looks. As confirmed by the European Institute of Design in its research on colour analysis, this discipline combines colour science with aesthetics to reveal each person’s unique potential.

By understanding your colour palette, you can not only enhance your natural beauty but also express your personality through shades that truly reflect you. Wearing the right tones instantly brightens the face, softens imperfections and can even simplify your makeup routine — your natural glow does the rest.

The four colour seasons

Colour analysis is based on four chromatic seasons: spring, summer, autumn and winter. Each season has its own palette, designed to suit different combinations of skin tone, hair and eye colour.

    • Spring: Golden skin tones, light hair, bright eyes. Fresh shades like sky blue, mint green and blush pink are your allies.
→ Try our blush pink sports bra or our mint green velvet leggings.

    • Summer: Rosy undertones, ash-toned hair, light eyes. Soft pastels like denim blue, light grey and lilac bring out your best.

    • Autumn: Golden or olive tones, red or dark hair, brown eyes. Warm, deep shades such as khaki green, ochre and burgundy make you shine.

    • Winter: Cool or olive undertones, dark hair, light or dark eyes. Strong contrasts like black, red and royal blue are made for you.

How to determine your season?

To discover your season, you need to consider your skin, hair and eye colour. The first step is identifying your undertone: warm or cool.

Warm or cool: how to know your undertone?

  • Summer and winter = cool undertones

  • Spring and autumn = warm undertones

Some people are “neutral”, meaning they can belong to two palettes (e.g. spring/summer, or winter/autumn). Don’t worry if you find it hard to define yourself precisely — that’s normal.

Test 1: Gold or silver?

Stand in natural light, wear gold and then silver.

  • If gold lights up your complexion, smooths fine lines and makes your eyes sparkle → warm undertone (spring/autumn).

  • If silver brings out your glow and makes your eyes stand out → cool undertone (summer/winter).

Test 2: Blue or green veins?

Check your veins in natural light.

Test 3: Look into your eyes

      • Grey or black hues → more likely cool undertones (summer/winter).

      • Green or brown hues → more likely warm undertones (spring/autumn).

And if you’re still unsure? You might be neutral. The good news: you get more colour choices.

      The main rules of colorimetry

      1. Wear your colours near your face: this is where they impact your skin tone most. A flattering top or scarf can transform your look.
→ Check out our colorful Tops and bras sport .

      2. Play with neutrals and jewellery: if you’re in black or grey, add pops of colour or jewellery aligned with your palette.

      3. Experiment with warm and cool tones: if you’re neutral (hazel eyes, brown hair), you can play with both.

      4. Highlight your eyes: wear tops or accessories that echo your eye colour.
→ Our retro purple playsuit makes hazel, blue and green eyes stand out.

Warm vs. cool colours: how to recognise them?

      1 / The basics!

      • Rose / Red → both warm & cool

      • Lemon yellow / Mustard yellow → cool vs. warm

      • Mint green / Khaki green → cool vs. warm

      • Terracotta, orange, brick red, brown, chocolate, ochre → warm

      • Salmon pink, sky blue, mint green, fuchsia → cool

2/ The subtlety of warm and cold colors

For example, purple is often considered cool (summer/winter), yet certain shades also flatter warm seasons (spring/autumn). Our 80’s Purple jumpsuit contains a hint of yellow, making the violet slightly warmer — and wearable for blondes or redheads too.

There are also subcategories within each season. For example, two “autumn” women may have very different palettes depending on whether their hair is dark blonde, auburn or brunette.
